Sparks – helping every child to be born healthy and stay healthy

About Sparks
When you ask any expectant parent if they want a boy or a girl, the answer is almost always the same – they don’t mind as long as their baby is healthy. That’s what Sparks is all about. Sparks is a unique children’s charity funding medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of ALL conditions and illnesses affecting children, babies and expectant mothers.

All of our pioneering, groundbreaking work has a single aim: to give every child the chance to be born healthy and stay healthy. Our medical breakthroughs mean that more children who only a few years ago may not have survived, can now thrive and grow up to enjoy school, playing with their friends and sharing the simple joys most of us take for granted.

The need
In the UK around 700,000 babies are born each year. Sadly 1 in 30 of these will be born with a health condition that could affect them and their families for the rest of their lives. That’s around 70 families a day that are told their baby has been born with an illness, disability or that their baby’s life is at risk. It’s just as hard to come to terms with your child developing an illness in the early years of life, for example every day 10 families have to hear the devastating news that their child has cancer. This is just one example. Do you know any children faced with baby brain injury, childhood cancers, juvenile arthritis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, leukaemia, meningitis, premature birth, cystic fibrosis, pre-eclampsia and cleft lip and palate? If so, Sparks has touched the lives of these children and their families.

How we are making a difference
We work with leading doctors and research teams in the UK and around the world to ensure we fund the highest quality research with the greatest chance of saving and changing lives forever.

Why choose Sparks?
There will be many children in your community who will never be able to ride a bike, swim or run. You can help us make a difference to these children by choosing to raise sponsorship money for Sparks.

Every child who raises money for Sparks will receive a goody bag and a certificate as a thank you. We will of course be at the Triathlon on the day so you can drop your sponsorship money off at our stand. We will provide every entrant with Sponsorship Forms and some other tips for fundraising.

If you have any questions about Sparks, please contact Nia Williams, our Regional Fundraising Co-ordinator on 07852 451 111 or nia@sparks.org.uk For further information about Sparks visit our website at www.sparks.org.

As a small charity the impact you could have is huge and every penny you raise really will make a big difference. Thank you on behalf of the teams of doctors, researchers and the thousands of children and their families whose hopes of a healthy life hinge on their discoveries and breakthroughs.

The NSPCC helps to keep children safe from child abuse. Child abuse can mean a lot of different things such as neglect, or physical or emotional abuse. We also help children to feel better if they have experienced abuse, and give them the chance to talk to people who care about their problems.

We would love to welcome you to the NSPCC's junior teamGO at the Kids Triathlon on June 26th. Any sponsorship money you raise will help us to keep other children safe and we will send you an NSPCC t-shirt to wear on the big day!

Sam Hollings aged 7, was part of the NSPCC's team in 2009 and raised a fantastic £145 - here’s what he said about why he chose to run for NSPCC.

"I am going to give all of my money to children who really need some help. Me and my brothers are very lucky, we have people who take care of us and have lots of toys and stuff. Some children get hurt by nasty people and some children have no food or toys and some children are very scared. I hope the money I raise will help them to be happy"

We would love to welcome you to the team!
